Sloppy Joes

I have never had a sloppy joe before tonight. I hate the word sloppy, and I never knew anyone named Joe that particularly interested me. Before tonight. I'm trying to minimize my time in the kitchen so I can maximize my writing blocks. Additionally, I have only a handful of paychecks left before the summer and frugality is suddenly the top virtue on my list. Using what's on hand for meals is an easy way to save money. Since Mark's graduation party left us with 6 pounds of ground beef, I figured I might want to say hello to Sloppy Joe!

I found a recipe online, and had dinner ready in ten minutes. Seriously. It was that fast. And, I am now a sloppy joe fan. Though I don't think I will ever eat anyone else's joes. It just doesn't feel right.

1 pound preferably grass-fed ground beef (ours was seasoned with my grill mix of smoked paprika, oregano, basil, sea salt and rosemary)

1 onion, chopped
1 green pepper, chopped
3/4 c ketchup
1 t mustard
1/2 t garlic salt (or minced garlic)
1/2 t molasses
1 t sugar

Brown beef, onion, and green pepper. Our beef is naturally lean so I didn't drain any fat, but you may want to.

Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine.

Cook for about 5 minutes.

Add to bun, or eat plain with some potato salad!

  2. Is the molasses a must for this recipe? I'm assuming this is what makes for the "sloppy" part. Is this organic molasses??

  3. i don't think it matters THAT much, but i did like the flavor. you could try maple syrup. and yes, it's organic. probably about $3-4 for a bottle that has lasted me at least 6 months! WF has it.
