Flaxseed Warmers
Mark thinks I'm nuts. Once again. But I press on. It's been pretty cold in our less-than-sunny apartment, and the mornings and evenings are just frigid! My friend Kristina gave me about 3 pounds of flaxseed, and a pound or so of lavender, and I have oodles of scrap fabric. Since some of my friends and family will be receiving homemade warmers for Christmas, I figured this was as good a time as any to start practicing. I busted out the fabric, sewing machine, and fillers. I sewed a square along three sides, turned it inside out, filled the pouch with flaxseed and lavender, and then sewed it shut. Viola! I ended up making one for me, and one for Mark. I threw one of them into the microwave for two minutes, and had a cozy little pillow that kept me warm while I fell asleep. I also heated it up before I drove to work, and it was such a treat to be able to feel my fingers the whole way to work!

These are great!! I am desperately looking for ideas for Christmas! We may be moving thousands of miles in a short period of time (over Christmas break) to an area where we know NO ONE! So I am working hard to have Christmas for the family prepared and mailed...
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned making homemade extracts over at The Nourishing Gourmet... Could you share your recipe?
Thanks!!
Thanks Peggy. I will do a post tomorrow or Wednesday with my "recipe". It's ridiculously simple and I almost feel like a magician, taking alcohol and beans and turning it into a well loved kitchen staple! =)
ReplyDeleteYou know I do make my own vanilla by adding beans to alcohol but never thought about making any other extracts that way... What flavors have you made? You mentioned using star anise. I look forward to your post in the next couple of days!!!
